São José dos Campos implements Brazil's first 100% electric fleet and redefines urban mobility.

The municipality is investing in the structural transformation of public transportation with 400 electric vehicles, technological infrastructure, and measurable environmental impact — a model that is attracting the attention of investors in logistics, technology, and sustainability.

In October 2025, São José dos Campos began implementing the country's first 100% electric public transportation system, consolidating the city as a hub for innovation in urban mobility and sustainable infrastructure. The operation, which started with five buses on lines 117 (Morumbi/Aquarius) and 318 (Terminal Central/Dom Pedro), already has 20 vehicles in circulation and is moving towards a goal of 400 units until the complete replacement of the current fleet.

The investment goes beyond vehicle renewal: it represents a structural reconfiguration of municipal public transport, with expansion to approximately 30 lines, onboard intelligence, charging infrastructure with a completed bidding process, and technological integration that reduces operational costs and emissions.

Embedded technology and operational efficiency

The new buses operate with real-time monitoring systems that control performance, schedules, routes, and reduce idle mileage—a key differentiator for fleet management and urban logistics. Equipped with internal cameras, USB ports, air conditioning, low floor, space for two wheelchair users, LED lighting, and an exclusive design, the vehicles meet international accessibility and comfort standards.

Embedded intelligence enables traceability, data analysis, and route optimization, generating operational savings and greater predictability for the transportation system—attributes that are of interest to investors in mobility solutions, urban technology, and smart logistics.

Verifiable environmental impact

In just the first month of operation of the initial five buses, the reduction in atmospheric pollutants was equivalent to preserving more than 2.600 trees. With the expansion of the fleet to 400 electric vehicles, the impact on air quality and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions will be exponential, aligning the city with global decarbonization goals and the demands of ESG investors.

In addition to the 12 VLPs (Light Rail Vehicles on Tires) already operating on the Green Line, the municipality now has 32 electric vehicles in its public transportation system, positioning itself as a real-world laboratory for sustainable mobility on a large scale.

User approval and practical validation

In November, after the first month of operation, the initial five buses won the approval of drivers and passengers. The quiet environment, air conditioning, low floor, and onboard technology were highlighted as differentiating factors by users of different profiles, including the elderly, people with reduced mobility, and professionals who use the transport daily.

Public acceptance validates the viability of the model and reduces risks associated with the technological transition — a relevant factor for companies considering providing solutions, equipment, or services connected to the new system.

Expanding infrastructure

In December, the City Hall concluded the bidding process for the implementation of vehicle charging infrastructure, ensuring scalability and operational continuity. The charging network is essential for fleet expansion and opens opportunities for energy companies, charging technology firms, and smart grid management companies.

The new lines in operation include 135 (Vale Sul Shopping Feeder/Center Vale Shopping), 225 (Galo Branco/Av. São José – Semi-express), 232 (Parque Novo Horizonte/Av. São José – Circular Center), in addition to the already mentioned 117 and 318, expanding connectivity between neighborhoods, terminals and shopping centers.

Long-term strategic commitment

The implementation of 100% electric public transportation is one of the main commitments of the 2025–2028 Management Plan, integrating urban planning, sustainability, and technology. The model connects all modes of mobility—including the cycle path system, quality public transportation, and other segments—designed to keep pace with the city's growth.
